On Wednesday (Jan 23) it was revealed via a Global News story that OSSTF D 12 had donated (sometime last December) $10,000 to the campaign of the Liberal party leadership contender, Eric Hoskins. The source for the story was factual information posted on the Ontario Elections website. Prior to the Jan 23rd story, there had been no information about this in any D12 communication to members (e-mails or website). Even in Doug Jolliffe’s president’s report to the monthly Secondary Teachers’ Bargaining Unit Council meeting of Jan 24, there was no mention of the donation. And when asked a direct question by REWT member, Luis Filipe of Parkdale Collegiate, Jolliffe’s reply was evasive, just admitting to offering “support” to three of the contenders for the Liberal Leadership.
On Thursday night (Jan 24) at the regular Council (delegate) meeting of the Secondary Teachers Bargaining Unit of OSSTF District 12, there was a by-election to fill a vacancy on the STBU Executive. The candidate favoured by the leadership, a full time Health and Safety Officer with the union, lost out to the challenge from Branch President of Harbord Collegiate, Hayssam Hulays. This is the first time in ten years that someone outside the inner circle of the leadership group “Team 12” has won an election. Congratulations Hayssam. REWT supporter, Janice Patterson, was one of 6 candidates and ran a great campaign, making excellent points in her speech, but didn’t make it past the third round of voting. No doubt, REWT will be looking to field more candidates in the full round of executive elections in May 2014.
Some rank and file members of District 12 OSSTF, dissatisfied with the current strategy of Provincial OSSTF in fighting Bill 115, have drafted this online petition and are looking to get as many signatories as possible. Please sign and pass along the link to any OSSTF friends you know.
